PRESS RELEASE: A. Le Coq 60th Moonsund Regatta - Inshore races of the Danske Bank leg | 14 Jul 17, piret.salmistu

Thursday was the day for short races in Pärnu. Inshore circles have always been highly expected and beloved events of the Moonsund regatta, also this year. Although, instead of three, only two races could be held, they were exciting and eventful enough for no one to be left disappointed.

The morning was spent waiting for wind and listening to the report presented by Leading Forecaster of the Weather Forecasting Department Taimi Paljak. Everything worked out as expert Taimi Paljak predicted and at 11.30 everyone started their preparations for going out on sea. Western winds had brought along nice and grey rain clouds and when all decent people let their dogs in, sailors went out racing.

LYS groups and Folkboots had their own circle and ORC groups raced another course. There was not too much wind but not too little either – average speed was 7-8 m/s with pouts of 9-10 m/s, which is quite enough for small circles but the pouring rain was not the most pleasant element of the experience.  As the morning wait was quite long, the organisers had to opt for two races later instead of three.

Both races were broadcast live online with background and info provided by expert commentators Joel Kukk and Andrus Kaalep. You can catch up HERE

ORC I group witnessed a great duel between two teams: Sugar 2 from Pärnu Yacht Club with Jaan Akermann at the helm and Olympic from Dagö Yacht Club skippered by Tiit Vihul. The first race was won by Olympic but Sugar 2 came out victorious from the second. Reval Cafe with Eero Pank’s team from Kalev Yacht Club was third and before the last day of racing the overall leader in this group has changed now. As the leaders so far – Forte and Jaak Jõgi – were fourth this time, they had to stand aside and let Olympic take the lead.

In ORC II Tanel Tamme’s team and Vesikaar from Kalev Yacht Club snatched the first race victory but Juss Ojala and Jazz from Kalev Yacht Clubs dominated the next race, won the inshore races and became also the overall leaders of the group leaving Amserv Toyota Sailing second.

The first three teams in ORC III group were all from Russia: Vassilii Alexeev’s team on Kvartet won both races, Dmitry Mostovoy and Prizrak were second and Anatoly Shukanov on Fart third. The overall leader of this group before the last day is Fart, leaving Kvartet as the runner-up.

The victory in ESTLYS I went to Le Mans and Kristaps Remess from Latvia thanks to two second places. Aare Kööp and Sylvia from Kalev Yacht Club was second and Mart Tamme on Katarina Jee from Saaremaa Marine Sports Society. The overall leader is Katarina Jee with LeMans at their heels.

In ESTLYS II, with one third and one first place, Brigitta, skippered by Mikk Metstak from Kalev Yacht Club, came out as winner of the day. Margus Hiet’s team on Elli from Saaremaa Marine Sports Society was second and Liliya with Dmitry Galluta at the helm from Russia were third. The overall leader here is Brigitta.

In ESTLYS III Pille Kaas and her team on Aurora from Haapsalu Yacht Club are still on a roll. They were followed by Mercurius and Margus Tasa from Saaremaa Marine Sports Society and Luisa with Henry Viiret from Haapsalu Yacht Club. Aurora is also holding firmly on to their leader’s role in the group.

In Folkboot group it was a good day for Tiit Riisalo and Lind from Kalev Yacht Club again. They are also the overall leaders. Peeter Välkmann’s Tee Chee and Olev Oolup’s Bacchus were left second and third respectively.

After-sail activities for the Danske Bank leg were most special. Pärnu Yacht Club hosted the traditional regatta dinner and Imre Aljas, who quite recently completed his circumnavigation on Bellatrix, presented his new book. Later all sailors and regatta guests were entertained by Swingers featuring Birgit and Jüri Pootsman.

The last race of the regatta, OlyBeti leg from Pärnu to Riga started at 10:00 Friday morning. In Riga the fleet will be welcome to the Sail In Estonia party on Saturday. The prizegiving ceremony will be held on Daugava.
